Weight Loss and Your Doctor - How to Maximize Weight Loss Results

by Reagan Douglas

You know it's time to pay your physician a visit when your pants don't fit anymore, when your tummy is obstructing your view of your extremities, when your chest begins feeling too tight for comfort and when your blood pressure and blood sugar levels won't go down to decent levels.

Visiting your physician should be your first step if you want to engage in a new fitness program.

This session with your physician can be an enriching and enlightening experience if you amply prepare for it. But if you go to it unprepared, you will not be able to maximize the visit and will come out of the clinic with a prescription and a lot of confusion because of questions that were left unasked.

If you want your fitness program to have direction, visit your doctor prepared. If you are, you make your doctor your ally in your efforts to lose weight and he or she will be able to give you crucial information you need for success in your diet and exercise programs.

Make sure that you have a list of all your questions about your health, your diet program and lifestyle changes you may need to make before setting foot inside your doctor's office. Have all questions ready since forgetting one out can derail your exercise efficiency and hence, the overall efficacy of your weight loss program.

Tell your doctor of any exercise plan you want to follow to see if you can do it without causing yourself undue strain or injury. If you don't have one, ask for a plan from your doctor. Also, if you are taking any meal supplements or formulas to aid you in your efforts to lose weight, inform your physician about it. By showing your doctor the supplement, he or she can tell you if the ingredients are safe and if the nutritional component is sufficient.

If your doctor orders you to take tests, have them done right away. Standard exams will most likely include X-rays, blood tests and a treadmill stress test.

Those who are very fat and obese will probably need to have more exams done. Don't think of this as a loss of precious money and time but as a way to determine if your weight gain is really due to too much eating. You need to be concerned if you simply put on all the weight when there were no dietary changes to your lifestyle. Besides, the tests done on you will serve as a baseline data to check if what you are doing to address it is effective or not.

When you see your cholesterol and triglyceride levels return to normal when you get tested again after a certain period of time, you know you're doing everything right.

Your doctor will prescribe prescription medications and will give you a diet plan to follow. If there are any side effects to the medication you are being asked to take, inform your doctor right away so he or she can make the necessary changes. Make sure that you observe return visits that your physician will schedule promptly.
